Abstract:

Two-phase flow and heat transfer in microchannels are of significant fundamental interest and diversified energy applications. Convective boiling in microchannels also has great potential serving as a heat sink for the cooling of next generation microelectronics. During the talk some of our recent researches on two-phase flow and phase change heat transfer in microchannels, including boiling,

Condensation and microchannel heat exchanger will be illustrated and discussed. Their applications in various energy systems will also be addressed.

Bio of the Speaker:

Dr. Pan is now a Tsing Hua distinguished professor of National Tsing Hua University. He received his BS degree in nuclear engineering from National Tsing Hua University in 1979, MS and Ph.D degrees in nuclear engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1983 and 1985, respectively. Dr. Pan promoted to full professor in 1990 at National Tsing Hua University. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Engineering and System Science of NTHU from February, 2001 to January, 2004 and the director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Research from December 2003 to July 2008. Dr. Pan was the Dean of College of Nuclear Science from August 2005 to July 2011. He has been serving as the chairman of the Advisory Committee of Nuclear Safety in the Atomic Energy Council since October, 2008. He is now the Chief Principal Investigator (Director) of the Low Carbon Energy Center, a center of excellence at NTHU funded by the Ministry of Education through the “Plan to Develop World-Class Universities and Top-Notch Research Centers”. He has also been the President of Chung-Hwa Nuclear Society since the beginning of 2012.

Dr. Pan’s research activities for the past two decades have been in the areas of two-phase flow, boiling heat transfer and energy engineering with a special focus on transition boiling, nucleate boiling near CHF, nuclear reactor thermalhydaulics, two-phase flow instability with or without nuclear coupling, two-phase natural circulation loops, microchannel two-phase flow, microchannel boiling, microchannel heat sink, microchannel reactor, and thermal-fluid transport in fuel cell systems, especially micro direct methanol fuel cells. He published a book in Chinese entitled “Boiling Heat Transfer and Two-phase Flow” in 2001. He has authored and co-authored about 80 SCI journal papers and 120 conference papers. He received a distinguished industry – academia collaboration award from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, ROC in 2003.
